How to Make Great ABBA Costumes

By Fred Tellier

Costumes are popular with all ages. Small kids like to go trick-or-treating dressed up as favorite characters and animals. Teens and adults often enjoy going to costume parties. For those who are going as a group, it can be quite fun to dress as members of a band. One of the best ideas for a group is to wear ABBA costumes. It is much easier to obtain Swedish band ABBA costumes than it may seem.

Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, then male vocal half of the group are a great idea if there is just two guys. Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad are a rockin' girl couple pairing if you are unable to have four people in your group.

Of course, there are always going to be specialty shops and seamstresses and tailors that will offer to sew the ABBA costumes. This is an option for those who have the money and do not have the time to make or prepare one.

However, what is even more rewarding is making your own ABBA costumes. If you are good at making patterns, following patterns, and sewing, then all that is needed are some patterns for the types of clothes ABBA wears or wore and some material that matches their outfits. The measurement of the person who is going to be wearing the costume being made is also needed so that it actually fits and is not made too big or too small. Some people are not so good at sewing or following patterns. Surprisingly, ABBA costumes can easily be thrown together from things found in stores as well. There is no need to buy completely new objects. In fact, that is usually one of the worst ways to come up with a unique ABBA costume.

Why not check out thrift stores like Goodwill? This will keep your costs low and might lead to some amazing discoveries. Even if you don't find an exact ABBA costume, you might find some old-fashioned clothing which can be adapted. If you can find some suitable bits and pieces, you can buy and wash them then combined them for a great ABBA costume. Alternatively, you might need to dye several piece to make them match, but this is very easy. When you buy items from a thrift store, they are usually only a couple of dollars each. You can feel free to cut them or adjust them to make these items into a complete new costume.

It is quite simple to imitate plain clothes. You can make headbands and vests with relative ease. Shiny costumes are harder to do but you can often find disco clothing or 70s outfits in thrift stores. You need to look at other items, rather than just adult clothes. You might find something in the baby's or children's department which you can chop up to make wrist bands or headbands. You might also find the perfect color. If not, remember you can use a dye to dye all your items the same color.

If your hair does not match your costume, you can always buy a wig or you can save money and do your hair up and dye it with temporary dye that washes out. ABBA costumes are all natural hair colors, so finding a wig or dye to fit the costume is really easy. If you really want to make your ABBA costumes look authentic, get your hair styled that way that ABBA did. Keep your ABBA costume cheap and go to hair school or have a friend who knows how to do hair do it for you.

The platform shoes might be the most difficult part of your ABBA costume. You should start your search for ABBA style platform shoes months before the event, if you have that much time to plan. Once you have your ABBA costumes ready, you will definitely have fun and draw lots of admiring glances at the party! - 16463
