AWOL Dads

By Carol Ann

More and more often in America, children are growing up without a father figure in their lives. It is a growing epidemic and it needs to be addressed. It is possibly a problem that is the root of all issues facing our children today.

Deadbead Dads. That's what we call them nowadays and their numbers have grown at an astronomical rate. They choose not to participate in their children's lives for months or often years at a time. The saddest part is that there are waiting lists of men who want to be fathers and are unable to.

So really, what does this mean? It means that boys are growing without any idea of how to become men. They don't have a role model, or in fact they do. They are learning that when the going gets tough the tough get gone. They are learning how to blow off their responsibility, be selfish, and disrespect women. They are also learning that they weren't good enough for their father to stay around for. And what type of fathers do you think that these up an coming men will be. Well, unfortunately many will follow in Daddy's footsteps and be an absentee Dad.

For girls though, it doesn't matter, right? Quite the contrary, girls need their fathers, someone who lets them know that they are worth while. Someone they can model their own relationships after. Not having a Daddy shows them that this is what they should expect from men. It also causes them many problems in forming relationships with men down the road. These girls will be the ones who become pregnant at an early age, in and out of bad relationships and many times left to single parent too.

The rampant and growing dilemma of absentee fathers is draining the soul from America's youth. Even though there are programs set up to help, children still need a father. Just because a man can't be with the children's mother, he should still be there for his kids, providing them with the love and strength they crave and deserve. - 16463
