Which Material Is Right For Your Wilmington Roofing Project?

By Jim Carpenter

To protect your home from the elements you need good walls and roof. As homes get older then there is a likelihood that at some stage the roof may need to be repaired or replaced. Below we provide some advice for your Wilmington roofing project or anywhere that you may live to help ensure that your roof is repaired or replaced to the best standard possible.

The first thing that you need to do is get a roofing contractor to come and look at your home's roof to see just what the problems are and what work needs to to be done. Ideally arrange for a few contractors to come and take a look and get each of them to give you a detailed report of their recommendations and costings.

After you have had the inspection carried out one can now decide which material is going to be used if the roof needs to be just repaired or if it needs replacing completely. Certainly for roof repairs it is best to go with the same material that currently covers yours, whilst for a replacement roof you can go for a wide variety of materials all worth considering. But what you need to know that the costs of each material used for roofing differs greatly and so do their characteristics as well.

Below we now look at the kinds of materials used for roofing projects not just in Wilmington but in other cities and town across the USA.

1. Asphalt is the most commonly used material in roofing today and there are two varieties one can get being organic or non-organic. The great thing about this particular kind of roofing material is that it not only comes in a wide range of colors but also it lasts a considerably long time. On average you can expect a well laid asphalt roof to last between 25 and 50 years.

2. Wood shingles is another material favored for roofing and is made from Western Red Cedar simply because it is very resistant to decay or corrosion. Normally there are three kinds of wood shingle used on properties today, and generally it is that classed as 1 which is used for the main part of the roof whilst those classed as 2 and 3 will be used for the roof sidings.

3. A material that is favored by many for roofing projects although it costs more but gives a roof a more natural look is wood shakes. The reason for this particular roofing costing so much more is that each piece needs to be sawed or hand split by the contractor so the time it takes to carry out the work correctly is much longer as well.

After you have chosen which material it is you are going to be using for y our Wilmington roofing project now you need to spend time finding a contractor to complete the work for you. It is crucial that the roofing contractor you choose for the project is one who specializes in the materials that you have chosen so you know the work carried out is going to be of the highest standard which will ensure that the roof lasts for years to come. - 16463
