I didn't really think much about the floor in our home, but after being discussed in a family meeting, I acknowledged that it was in need of much repair. Being a handyman wannabe, I fixed the upper wooden floors myself. Replacing broken/termite infested wood, re-polishing the floor to have a balanced overall finish, it was pretty much hard but doable for me. The ground floor, however, proved to be more difficult, as it wasn't really wood. It was old, dilapidated wooden tiling over a concrete surface. Clearly the unsightly tiles would have to go.
As it turns out, the concrete underneath, while having a consistent finish, is far from awe-inspiring. Now what do I do with that? Coming from the internet generation, I went to the internet to find some answers. It didn't take me too long to find a web page on Polishing Concrete Floors, and I went in to check. I definitely found a site that could help me.
Mundane concrete, polished correctly, becomes a remarkable part of someone's home. Particularly inspiring to me was the floor photograph that has a hint of coffee; there are apparently a number of things that could be done with concrete to make it look very presentable.
Another benefit of polished concrete is that it requires relatively little upkeep. Only the occasional cleaning is sufficient, and it requires no waxing at all. That's a huge plus for me, because cleaning house is definitely not something I'd want to do everyday.
I doubt I would be able to renovate our home floor like this myself, though. Fortunately, the site also links to a message board. This will undoubtedly help you find contractors in your area: Failing that, there's probably at least one user there who'd be willing to give helpful advice. - 16463
